A powerful and fleshy wine from the south of France that should delight fans of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and such like. Full-bodied, with a beautiful structure around aromas of red fruits, Mediterranean herbs and subtle vanilla notes. Supple & plush in the mouth, with red and black fruits combining with notes of fig, and liquorice. The finish is one of concentrated, soft fruits, baking spices and vanilla.
Grenache Noir 60%, Mourvèdre 30%, Syrah 10%, 2021.

Micro-Cosme Grenache-Pinot Noir. Rhone, France. 14%.
I love this ‘rule-bending’ Rhone red – a fusion of 60% Grenache grapes from several vintages & 40% Pinot Noir grapes which deliver beguiling notes of strawberry compote, gingerbread, souk spices & heirloom rose in a blend that is vibrant & complex, supple & deliciously smooth red wine. The wine is classed as a ‘Vin de France’ rather than ‘Cotes du Rhone’ due to being produced with the non-permitted Pinot Noir grape variety in the region & also using multiple vintages of Grenache.
This wine is another ‘brain-storm’ from innovative wine maker; Louis Barruol – maker of the wonderful & much sought after wines of Chateau St.-Cosme Gigondas in the Southern Rhône.

2019 Carpineto, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva DOCG, Tuscany, Italy. 13.5%. £45
This exceptional red wine derives its name from the Renaissance town of Montepulciano. The term “Nobile” designating a vineyard area deemed special enough that in the past the wines produced there were reserved exclusively for the aristocratic, noble families of the town.
Vineyards have to be planted with a minimum of 70% Sangiovese (known locally as Prugnolo Gentile), & Canaiolo, (a local Tuscan Grape which used to be the main grape in Chianti).

2024 Kuzubağ, Denizli, Turkey. 14%. £35.
The region of Çal is situated in the inner Aegean part of Turkey on a plateau 850-1100 metres above sea level. This high elevation is a key feature of Kuzubağ, as the cooler nights and warm days at this altitude help the grapes ripen slowly, leading to good flavor and natural acidity in the wines. Pale red in colour, on the nose, fresh cherry, raspberry, red forest fruits and with white spices, this medium bodied wine has a very lively aromatic structure. Fresh in its youth with fruity aromas while slowly developing light velvety tannins and spice notes.

2021 Groot Constantia, ‘Lady of Abundance’ Constantia, South Africa. 14%. £32.
From the oldest winery in South Africa; This medium bodied, supple red has flavours of blackcurrant, plums, cherries and pomegranate, with hints of chocolate and spice on the nose.
The berry fruits follow through on the palate, with a lingering spicy aftertaste. The tannins are well rounded & soft on the palate, yet still firm enough to give a long-lasting mouth-feel. Pinotage 26%, Merlot 24%, Cabernet Franc 9%, Cabernet Sauvignon 8%, Grenache 7%, Petit Verdot 3%.

2022 Terroir Hunter Carmenere. Valle de Cachapoal, Chile. 14%. £30
Quality Carmenère with an intense expression of fresh raspberries & cherries with subtle hints of green pepper. On the palate, notes of dark chocolate & sweet berried fruit & enveloped in smooth, elegant tannins & a vibrant acidity that lends a fresh, supple & juicy finish.

2016 Château Cantemerle, Les Allées de Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc. 13%. £45
Away from the bright lights of Pauillac, Margaux & Saint-Julien; Château Cantemerle quietly goes about it’s business nestled away in woodland at the southern-most end of the Médoc region.

Just two red wines are made. And whilst the Chateau’s first red wine is built for long-term cellaring, it’s second wine; Les Allées de Cantemerle offers full enjoyment at a relatively earlier age.
The 2016 vintage is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with a little Merlot & Cabernet Franc that sees 12 months in French oak barrels. It offers up aromas & flavours reminiscent of blackberry, black cherry & subtle floral notes. Silky textured, with good fruity richness & hints of mint, vanilla, spice & white pepper that enhance its complexity, along with a smoky, lingering finish. Silky tannins and a rich, aromatic profile provide a classic yet approachable Haut-Médoc claret.

2023 Vina Kozlović Teran. Istria, Croatia. 13%. £39 – A cracking & interesting cheeseboard red!
Since 1904, the Kozlovic family have been making wine in Istria – a peninsula at the northwestern end of the country’s Adriatic coastline, which also boarders the Italian region of Friuli, where an understandable connection has been made with wine, food & people.
Teran is the top grape variety for red wine production, and here is a fine example fo it – this medium-bodied red showing the aromatic, slightly ‘wild’ side of Teran, along with a classic tart cranberry freshness, and marked minerality that underscores flavours of raspberries, blackberries & blueberries The finish is fresh, and tasty, with savoury tannins, crunchy red fruits & notes of wild herbs.
