A former agricultural estate of the Ursulines de Beaucaire since the 16th century, the estate owes its name to the nuns called ‘Mourgues’ in the Provençal language. ‘Grès’ comes from the rounded rocks of the Costières de Nîmes that give our wine their character.
In the courtyard of the estate, the Latin motto on the sundial SINE SOLE NIHIL (Nothing Without Sun) celebrates the Mediterranean climate which permits optimal ripeness for a naturally rich and balanced wine.
Six bottles of 2019 Chateau Mourgues du Gres, Costieres de Nimes, France.
Around 70% Syrah from 30+ year old vines mixed with Grenache & a touch of Mourvèdre. The colour is a deep ruby, with purple hues while it’s young. Profound and vibrant, with aromas of blackberries, slate and crisp blackcurrant. Medium to full bodied. 14%. In the mouth it is supple, generous & gourmand with smooth, harmonious tannins. Flavours of juicy red berries, wet-rock with notes of violet. A hint of what the locals call garrique – a ‘catch all’ word for bushy, fragrant plants that grow wild such as juniper, thyme, rosemary and lavender. A mineral finish that contributes to the balance of the wine. Very elegant. Delicious on its own or pair with hearty seasonal stew, duck, lamb dishes.
